Filipino engineer Benjamin "Benjie" Tan, who linked the Philippines to the internet, died last Thursday, Dec. 26. The internet pioneer died of lymph node cancer, as reported on the technology news website Newsbytes.ph on the same day.
Tan is recognized as the engineer who first installed the router on March 29, 1994, which enabled the Philippines to access the internet.
Prior to his death, he was confined to the hospital three times this year due to lymph node mass in his abdomen and pneumonia, Edison Ong told the website.
